Research is systematic study directed toward fuller scientific knowledge or use of knowledge directed toward the production of useful materials, devices, systems or methods including design and development of prototypes and processes.
Monies spent to support research activities (basic and applied research and development). Include indirect costs and pass-throughs to institutions. Funding sources include: Federal (considered a national benchmark to measure research success); State; Private (industry and non-profit); and Local (institutional funds).
Sourced from the National Science Foundation (except where noted below). Includes expenditures in science and engineering (S&E) fields only. Non-S&E expenditures are not included.
Calculating Research Expenditures per FTE T/TT Faculty
Annual NSF total and federal research expenditures per institution were divided by IPEDS FTE T/TT faculty (fall) for each academic year.
- In cases where total and federal research expenditures were unavailable from NSF (or were reported as part of a system), The Center for Measuring University Performance Top American Research Universities data were used. MUP disaggregates these using a variety of methods and reports individual institutions, but their data is only available through 2008. So, using ratios based on 2008 TARU data and the 2009 NSF research expenditures data, OSI was able to estimate disaggregated 2009 expenditures. In cases where both NSF and TARU data were unavailable, IPEDS total research expenditures data were used.
- IPEDS does not report federal research expenditures. The following peer institutions do not have data published by NSF or derivable from MUP's TARU report and were not included: Adams State College, Auburn U-Montgomery, Augusta State U, CSU-Stanislaus, Clarion U of PA, Columbus State U, Framingham State U, Georgia College & State U, Purdue U-Calumet, U MI-Dearborn, U MI-Flint, U Southern IN, Washburn U, Western NM U, and Winthrop U.
- As of the redesigned HERD Survey for 2010, campuses will no longer be reported as part multi-campus totals. Campuses will be reported and ranked separately.
The UT Brownsville and UT Pan American campuses closed at the end of AY 2015. UT Rio Grande Valley began enrolling students in Fall 2015.
National Science Foundation National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (published data tables and/or downloads from WebCASPAR), Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), and The Center for Measuring University Performance Top American Research Universities.
When looking at national data or in rankings, research expenditures is usually from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Differences between the THECB & National Science Foundation (NSF) Surveys:
- The THECB collects data on non-science disciplines, which are used in reporting. The NSF collects information on non-science disciplines, but, in most of its reporting, science and non-science disciplines are separated.
- The NSF survey allows institutions to calculate their unreimbursed indirect costs. THECB’s survey allows only tracked indirect costs as reported in the institution’s annual financial report. Institutions using the NSF calculation will have a considerably higher total in the Institution source of funding in NSF reports by comparison with THECB reports.
- NSF may impute data for institutions that do not respond to or fully complete their survey.
